Adjust the brakes

The brake pads have contact continuously with the rim because the rim is not completely in the middle of the brake pads.

You will need the next tools:

Allen key

Screwdriver

Let's start with the V-Brake model.

To adjust the position of the brake, there is one screw on each side of the brake. We are going to use this screw:

It works simply. Screwing the screw makes the brake pad move away from the rim. Unscrewing the screw make the brake pad get closer to the rim.

Unscrewing                                                           Screwing

There is a screw in both sides, so you can use the one on the left and the one on the right. If you screw on one side and unscrew on the other side it will have the same effect. Just find a balance in between both sides.

If you screw on both sides both parts will separate and if you unscrew on both sides both parts will com together:

Screwing both                                                                 Unscrewing both

Everything is correct when both arms moves the same distance when you press the brake lever in your handlebar.

Cantilever brakes works the same, but not always they have the balance screw. If they don't have it you can adjust them moving the brake pads:

Wrench tool

Unscrew the screw that holds the brake pads. Use an allen key and a wrech tool to hold the nut on the other side. Once you released the screw, move the brake pads. Make sure there is the same distance in both sides in between the brake pads and the rim.

After if screw again the bolt with the help of the allen key and the wrench tool. The last check. Brake with the brake lever. Both arms of the brake should move same distance.
